Major of Lienz |
Every two years we in Lienz look forward to welcoming all the sportswomen, service people and others connected with the world cup circus to our town. As soon as the last skier from the previous race has left, the preparations for the next race begin.
In the long months of preparation the hard-working Skiclub helpers under their president Werner Frömel and the male and female employees of the Lienzer Bergbahnen have created ideal conditions not only for the skiers, but also for the spectators and all interested parties.
Naturally, we are particularly proud this year to be able to present the Schloßberg to the world cup athletes in its new splendour. A newly constructed and just as tricky finishing slope poses new challenges and makes for even more arena atmosphere. The new combined ropeway transports the skiers and their service people to the start faster and in greater comfort.
We did not, of course, erect this new Schloßberg ropeway solely for those taking part in the world cup races, but having the best women skiers in the world among the first to use the ropeway is an excellent omen, since it is mainly the more sporting skiers who use the Hochstein ropeway and pistes.
We are looking forward to two exciting races again this year, to all the prominent sports personalities and to the fringe events, which this year promise to be quite something.
We are all anticipating with excitement and delight interesting races in a positive, friendly atmosphere.
All that remains is for me to wish the world cup events 20009 in Lienz the best of luck and may everything run smoothly.

Lienz mit neuem Weltcup-Outfit!
End of the first third of the season, final women’s world cup race of the year – Lienz shines as a world cup venue every two years with the added attraction of the traditional crowds of spectators at the end of the year. And yet this year it will be different from what we are used to. The course, more or less in the middle of the town and with the finishing area right beside the main road, will have a new look to it. Not only has the giant slalom course been widened – it still retains its difficulties that have challenged the world’s top skiers again and again – but a new snow-making facility has been installed and the finishing area has been newly adapted to meet the latest requirements. Everything has been done successfully. The Lienz organisers can be truly proud of their sporting showpiece. As far as the races themselves are concerned, the winners of the last two competitions, Marlies Schild and Anja Pärsson, will be taking part and I am convinced that in view of the course corrections the top-class skiers will have the appropriate conditions and that the 2 competitions will be technically superlative. May I wish all those concerned 2 thrilling race days.
