Lienz Skiing Classic Celebrations

Besides the sporting highlights, several social events will be in the limelight at the women’s slalom and giant slalom races in Lienz this December. Lienz will be celebrating 40 years of world cup skiing, the Lienz Ski Club is celebrating its centenary and the new Hochstein section I ropeway will be officially opened. Scores of VIPs are expected.

What an electric atmosphere there was that year when the Italian skiing legend Alberto Tomba and Austria’s Bernhard Gstrein fought it out on the Hochstein run with Tomba “la bomba” finally conceding victory to Gstrein by one hundredth of a second! 21 years on, Lienz might once again be turned into a bubbling cauldron when those two stars of yesteryear race down the H2000 course, at least if Werner Frömel, head of the organising committee, and race director Siegfried Vergeiner get their way. “40 years’ world cup skiing, the Lienz Ski Club centenary and the opening of the new combined ropeway on the Hochstein just have to be celebrated in the proper fashion. Not only with the ladies’ giant slalom and slalom, but also with the appropriate supporting programme, which is going to outshine everything that has ever been seen here before. Among other things we are hoping to relive the 1988 duel between those 2 skiing legends,” Frömel stated.

All the other winners since the first world cup race here in 1969 have been invited - Gustav Thöni, Karin Köllerer, Anita Wachter, Anja Pärsson and Sabine Egger, who catapulted herself in the second leg from the bottom of the rankings to win the slalom in 1999. “The Grandhotel will host a gigantic reception. On the following day the starting bibs will be handed out in the main square of Lienz. It’s going to be a rendezvous for the limelighters, although, of course, the races themselves under the auspices of the Lienz Ski Club will be the highlight,” said Frömel. The event will be broadcast to 18 countries, from Central Europe to Colorado. 18 TV stations and 130 journalists will be coming to Lienz. “It is the only event in East Tyrol to be transmitted live. The media distribution is huge and so is the opportunity to show the world that there is a new aerial ropeway in Lienz,” Frömel added. According to ropeway managing director Andreas Kleinlercher

construction work is on schedule. Provided nothing goes wrong the snow-making devices can be switched on at the beginning of December. “In future 34 snow-makers (30 snow lances and 4 snow cannon) will ensure the ideal snow base. The system has been installed to create within 60 hours a world cup piste. That requires 40cm of snow.” “It has never been this reassuring,” Frömel praises Kleinlercher. In order not only to have sufficient amounts of snow but also to attract thousands of spectators to the world cup slope in Lienz as in previous years, marketing strategies have been implemented, targeting fans from South Tyrol to Salzburg. The gross budget for the world cup skiing event is in the region of € 1.7m.
