Just like the downhill classic in Val Gardena or the giant slalom in Alta Badia the women’s races (GS and S) after the Christmas holiday break on 28th and 29th December in Lienz have become “technical classics”. That’s why South Tyrol’s women racers Manuela Mölgg and Denise Karbon met for an informal press conference with the Lienz chief press officer, Mag. Franz Rohracher, and other local press reps on the premises of K1 at the Kronplatz ski lifts in Reischach. They reviewed the season so far and then previewed the coming days of preparation for the races in Lienz and thereafter. Unfortunately, Nicole Gius was not able to be present and the young Lisa Agerer, who is said to be in great form in her GS practice runs, was training with the speed skiers in Santa Caterina.
Manuela Mölgg has had 2 good results up till now (7th in Aspen and 10th in Flachau the other day) and is very pleased because things are going well for her in spite of her constant back trouble and she feels she is in better form than she was this time last year when she crashed out in the opening races. “I’m really looking forward to Lienz,” she said, “as the races there are more or less home events for me because I live so close and a lot of fans from the Val Pusteria and Alta Badia travel to watch the races, creating a fantastic atmosphere every time.” On the demanding course she feels very much at home because it is steep right from the start gate and she can get into her rhythm straight away – much better than on flatter pistes such as Levi. It is a strong possibility that she’ll be able to repeat her success in her last race in Lienz when she came second in the GS behind Kathrin Hölzl.
Denise Karbon also has fond memories of Lienz, winning the giant slalom on the Hochstein run (name of the World Cup course) 4 years ago (with Nicole Gius an excellent third). This year she crashed out in Sölden, unfortunately, after clocking an amazing intermediate time and in the second race in Aspen she was able to keep up with the top 3 for three-quarters of the race, finishing a very good 6th despite suffering from influenza. In the past few days she has been training in first-class conditions on the Gran Risa in Alta Badia and on the Passo Furcia. She, too, feels she’s in good form and conditions in Lienz are going to be similar and should suit her. She’ll be cheered on by her countless supporters from Kastelruth who have organised their own bus. Call her fan club and book your seat: phone 335 - 214 680 or 0471 – 706 369.
State of the race course
Preparations are in full swing….
Yesterday they started working with the spray bar and the course is in excellent condition according to the FIS reps and the race director. Since only very little precipitation, if any, is expected in the next few days with glorious weather and cloudless skies, the two top girls from South Tyrol will get their wish – a very hard and even piste for many of the racers, which means Manuela and Denise will surely be fighting for one of the places on the podium. Nicole Gius or Lisa Agerer could also spring a surprise. And let’s not forget Federica Brignone, who has also had top results. All of them are in with a chance and can give themselves a belated Christmas present.
3-day World Cup party:
great off-piste atmosphere
For the first time in Lienz the draw for the bibs for the first race, the GS, will be held in public on the main square on the evening of Tuesday, 27th December at 6pm. A rock concert with a local band and the Ski World Cup Girl 2011 final round will be the supporting features. On Wednesday evening folk music star Marc Pircher and master of ceremonies Harry Prünster will be making sure everyone is in a party mood at the victory ceremony and the exciting bib draw on the climbing facility. And on Thursday before and after the women’s slalom there’ll be a concert in the finish area with a band from East Tyrol featuring the fantastic Sara Köll. So everything is ready for a groovy party in East Tyrol and lots of fans from South Tyrol will be there. For all you ski fanatics from the Val Pusteria: Off to Lienz!
