The Lienz ski club has played an active role in winter sports for 96 years now. Besides the search for and promotion of juvenile sports enthusiasts, ski racing has become an integral part of the club’s activity. Ever since the legendary Alberto Tomba lost by 1/100th of a second to Bernhard Gstrein in 1988 the Hochstein course in Lienz has been a major attraction and guarantees an emotional and exciting atmosphere each time. Unforgettable the winning second run of the Sabine Egger from Carinthia, who fought her way from the back of the field to win the 1999 slalom. The day before, Anita Wachter had won the giant slalom. All of Lienz was at fever pitch celebrating the Austrian sports festival.
In 1969 the women’s world cup put in its first appearance on the Hochstein course and returned after a lengthy break in 1997.
Since then Lienz has alternated on a two-year basis with Semmering as the venue for women’s world cup giant slalom and slalom races. The races in Lienz are particularly important for the technical skiers and the allrounders going for the overall world cup trophy.
