For a lot of regions being given the chance to stage a World Cup race is a goal worth striving for – and getting the Christmas slot for the women’s races means a fierce contest between a number of regions in Austria and Eastern Europe. On December 28th and 29th this year Lienz will once again be the focal point of the Ski World Cup, with the ladies participating in a slalom and a giant slalom. “The World Cup is the biggest media event in winter in Lienz and the surrounding region”, Werner Frömel, OC chariman explained. The races, however, are the subject of a bitter struggle. The events in Lienz are guaranteed, but there are lots of winter sports regions fighting for the December slot after Christmas. As Werner Frömel points out in connection with the massive competition: “Schruns is engaged in intensive negotiations with FIS, but Bulgaria, the Czech Republic, Slovakia and Belarus also want to host a World Cup race and these countries are able to provide sufficient funds.”
In Austria alone the second leg of the slalom two years ago was watched by 1.2m viewers. “That’s the same number of people who saw Wetten, daß.? the same evening,” says Frömel referring to the advertising effectiveness of the TV broadcast. “Even the Gröden downhill with 18% coverage hasn’t got more viewers,” the OC chariman says with a smile. In his opinion, “Without the World Cup the Lienz Dolomites region just isn’t on the map internationally in winter.” Press aide Franz Rohracher draws attention to the internal effect of the mega event: “Lienz presents itself as a sports town. It’s vital that there’s something going on in the town, not just for the youngsters.” He is convinced that “..this huge event helps to curb emigration and also creates a lot of business revenue.” The artist Georg Planer, a native of St. Veit in Defereggen, presented the official World Cup painting yesterday. “The proceeds from the sale of this work and the 200 reproductions will go to a charitable cause in the region,” stated Werner Frömel.
